BEACHES

Pangani

The peaceful Pangani coast offers a relaxing alternative to the hustle and bustle of Zanzibar. The coast, with its palm-lined beaches, laid back atmosphere and collection of low-key resorts, is so relaxing that it is easy to linger far longer than you had planned. North of the Pangani River the high cliffs form the small bays around the coastline, giving a stunning view of the Indian Ocean. Whilst south of the river, the expansive sandy beaches offer some great swimming and relaxing opportunities.

Pangani town merits a leisurely walk, with its dilapidated collection of carved doorways, buildings from the German colonial era and old Indian trading houses. The town lays at the mouth of the Pangani River, which flows all the way down from the Kilimanjaro Highlands and meets the Indian Ocean. Pangani has a remarkable history dating back to the 15th century and traces of old buildings and monuments still can be seen.

The main port town of Tanga to is rich in history and well worth a visit. The towns architecture and historical sites pay homage to its importance in the Swahili trading empire, and in colonial times both German and British.
