Chada Camp*****

We’ve kept Chada Katavi the way it began – small and intimate with just six East African safari tents. Each of them is spacious and comfortable with wide-open fronts giving you panoramic views of the plain and animal life that constantly comes and goes. From the air you have to be looking carefully to spot the tents (we’ve made sure of this) and they blend totally into their surroundings. Elephant are frequent visitors, attracted to the same shady fruit trees as us, and vast herds of buffalo graze on the flood plain.

Accommodation : Chada Katavi is designed to be a stylishly simple bushcamp and since we share all the resources here with Katavi’s animals and so we’ve ensured that our footprint remains light. We’ve avoided unnecessary fripperies but you’ll still find all your needs taken care of. Chada Katavi’s tents, just 6 of them, rest beneath shady trees on the edge of the Chada Plain. They have wide-open fronts and lots of shade net windows to let in the passing breeze. The en-suite bathrooms are reached via zipped flaps and all have eco-flush loos and an urn of cool water to refresh yourself. Safari style bucket showers are the best thing here, tried and tested and we can think of no better way to wash off the Katavi dust under one of these. Water is a valuable resource here, especially during the dryer months, and we share it with a great many other animals – we take this very seriously here and “bucket showers” help us to do that.

Dining : In a clearing you’ll find the dining tent and a library, both are comfortable little spaces to while away the hours when you’re not out in the midst of a safari adventure. An evening drink around the campfire is the essence of safari, helping to round off a day of excitement out in the wild.

Katuma Bush camp*****

In the centre of Katavi National park lies Katuma, a charming Bush Lodge that offers a riveting bush experience with breathtaking views over the vast plains of Katisunga. Katuma Bush Lodge has been designed to blend in with its surroundings to avoid distraction from the beauty of Katavi.

The Lodge underwent a full refurbishment in 2011 but retains an African simplicity and is an idyllic base for exploring the spectacular wildlife of this remote and wild Park.

Accommodation : Katuma Bush Lodge consists of spacious and comfortably furnished Safari tents on raised wooden platforms, each with a writing desk, lamps, fine linen and en-suite facilities offering step-in showers with a full range of amenities. The Tent’s private balconies allows for excellent views over the plains.

Dining : The brand new Mess area consists of a comfortable guest lounge, a spacious dining facility and spectacular viewing and swimming pool deck. The central fireplace on the main deck creates a warm and inviting ambience allowing our guests to arrive as strangers but leave as friends.

Meals are freshly flavoured, aromatic and accompanied with tropical fruits and juices. On the last evening of your stay, a barbecue will be served under the shade of tamarind trees, so you can reflect on the unforgettable experiences you’ve had at Katavi while watching the sun setting over the plains.

Palahala Luxury camp****

Located in Katavi National Park, a remote national park in southwest Tanzania, Palahala Camp is a permanent tented luxury safari camp which affords the perfect opportunity to experience a wildlife-rich, wonderfully tourist-free part of Africa during your Tanzania safari. Opened in 2005, Palahala, which means “sable antelope” in Swahili, sits on the banks of the Kapapa River, an advantageous location particularly during the dry season.

Accommodation : Palahala’s eight spacious tents are octagonal-shaped and measure 90 square metres. Each tent is furnished with king-size beds, the finest linens, and goose down quilts, and includes verandas that overlook the bush and river. NEW in 2013: We have installed plumbing at Katavi, so each tent now features solar heated hot running water. Old-fashioned hurricane lamps light your way for your short walk from the camp’s main tent. Each tent also features a writing desk and free daily laundry service.

Dining : The quality and variety of dishes our chefs can prepare in the middle of the bush will astound you. Experienced chefs create mouth-watering delicacies using fresh Tanzanian produce, meats and fish. Delectable meals are served in a number of intimate locations with uninterrupted views of the river. Enjoy a hearty breakfast in camp on our viewing deck, to the raucous cries of fish eagles, before heading out on an early morning game drive. Lunch is provided in the bush, and there are always snacks and drinks on the vehicles. And what would a safari experience be without the requisite afternoon tea and cakes? You will experience late afternoon sundowners in amazingly beautiful locales, and enjoy romantic, torch-lit dinners in the boma, complete with campfire and a full sky of stars.

Katavi Wildlife Camp****

Katavi only sees a couple of hundred tourists a year, maintaining Katavi as one Tanzania’s great safari wildernesses. There are a handful of safari lodges in Katavi but we only recommend two properties, Katavi wildlife lodge and Chada Katavi by Nomads. Both are great but if you can afford the best we recommend Chada Camp.

Accommodation : The main area of Katavi Wildlife lodge has great views onto the Katasunga Plains where you will often have great views of huge herds in the dry season. The main area is very open with relaxed sitting areas near a bar, a great place to relax in the afternoon. Katavi wildlife has 8 guest tents which are sat on raised platforms covered with thatched roofs. The tents are of Meru style and are surprisingly spacious with en suite bathrooms at the rear. There are great views out of each of the tents. It’s a great little camp!
