Pangani town merits a leisurely walk, with its dilapidated collection of carved doorways, buildings from the German colonial era, and old Indian trading houses. The town lies at the mouth of the Pangani River, which flows down from the Kilimanjaro Highlands and meets the Indian Ocean. Pangani Beach has a remarkable history dating back to the 15th century and traces of old buildings and monuments still can be seen.

The main port town of Tanga is rich in history and well worth a visit. The town’s architecture and historical sites pay homage to its importance in the Swahili trading empire, and in colonial times both German and British.
