Tanzania Beaches: Find the Right Coast or Island for Your Trip

Tanzania beaches give you several ways to spend time by the Indian Ocean. You can stay near the restaurants and swimming beaches of northern Zanzibar, choose a smaller lodge around Pangani, or plan your days around snorkeling and diving on Mafia or Pemba. The right choice depends on what you want to do, how much time you have, and where your safari ends.

Start with the comparison below. It covers beaches in Tanzania on both the mainland and the islands, with the differences that matter when you are booking: tides, activities, accommodation and the journey to get there.

Which Tanzania Beach Destination Should You Choose?

For a first beach trip with a wide choice of hotels and restaurants, start with Zanzibar. For a mainland stay, compare the coast south of Dar es Salaam with Pangani and Ushongo farther north. Mafia and Pemba are worth considering when snorkeling, diving or a smaller island stay matters more than having lots of places to go out.

Destination

Consider it for

What to check before booking

Nungwi and Kendwa, Zanzibar

Swimming, sunsets, restaurants and a choice of hotels

The hotel’s exact beach frontage, boat activity and nearby nightlife

Paje and Jambiani, Zanzibar

Kitesurfing, beach walks and staying near a coastal village

Tides, wind and the distance to water at low tide

Matemwe and Kiwengwa, Zanzibar

Beach hotels on the northeast coast

Swimming access at different tides and how far the hotel is from restaurants

Pangani and Ushongo

A quieter mainland beach stay with local excursions

Transfer route, meals and which activities the lodge can arrange

Kigamboni and the coast south of Dar

A beach stay connected to a Dar es Salaam arrival or departure

Road travel, beach access and the facilities at the particular property

Kunduchi and the northern Dar coast

A short coastal break near the city

Traffic, day visitors and whether the atmosphere suits your plans

Bagamoyo

Coastal time combined with Swahili history

The hotel’s beach location and arrangements for historical visits

Mafia Island

Marine activities and a smaller choice of lodges

Shoreline, boat excursions, marine park fees where applicable and transfers

Pemba Island

Diving, smaller lodges and a less busy island stay

Connections, boat access where needed and diving suitability

Saadani

Wildlife activities and a mainland coastal setting

Park arrangements, access and the activities available from your lodge

These are different types of destination. A long beach, an island and a coastal national park should not be treated as interchangeable hotel locations.

Zanzibar Beaches: Compare the North and East Coasts

Zanzibar is part of Tanzania. Most visitors booking a Zanzibar beach holiday stay on Unguja, the main island. Pemba is another island in the Zanzibar archipelago and needs its own travel arrangements.

Zanzibar strandparadijs: een geweldige plek om te eindigen na de safari op het vasteland van Tanzania

Nungwi and Kendwa: Swimming and More Places to Go Out

Nungwi and Kendwa are on northern Unguja. They are useful starting points if you want beach time alongside restaurants, boat trips and a choice of accommodation. Their west-facing stretches also suit people who want to watch the sunset from the shore.

Swimming is generally less restricted by the retreating tide here than on much of Zanzibar’s east coast. That does not mean every section is suitable at every hour. Ask about the water directly outside your hotel, especially if you are travelling with children or prefer to avoid areas used by boats.

The atmosphere changes between properties. Check whether your room is near a busy beach venue or somewhere quieter before choosing on photographs alone.

Paje and Jambiani: Kitesurfing, Beach Walks and Village Life

Paje and Jambiani are on Unguja’s southeast coast. Paje has an established kitesurfing scene, while Jambiani offers accommodation along a coastal village where fishing and seaweed farming are part of everyday life.

The tides make a noticeable difference. At low tide, broad areas of the seabed can be exposed and the water may be a long way from your hotel. If frequent sea swimming is important, ask how it works at the property you are considering and whether there is a pool.

For kitesurfing, match your dates to local wind conditions and your ability. For a quieter stay, check nearby bars and activity centres rather than assuming every part of Jambiani or Paje has the same atmosphere.

Matemwe, Kiwengwa and Other East-Coast Stays

Matemwe and Kiwengwa add more hotel choices on the northeast coast. They are worth comparing if you would rather spend much of your time at your accommodation, with selected excursions during the stay.

Check the same details here: the tide outside the hotel, the swimming area, meal arrangements and transport for evenings out. A beachfront room gives you a view and access to the shore; it does not tell you how easy ocean swimming will be throughout the day.

For a more detailed comparison, read our guide to Zanzibar’s beaches. If you have already chosen the island, see our Zanzibar holidays page to plan the stay.

Mainland Tanzania Beaches: Options Beyond Zanzibar

You do not have to take an island flight or ferry to include beach time. Mainland Tanzania has coastal stays near Dar es Salaam and farther north around Pangani. Choose the area around your route and the accommodation available, rather than assuming a mainland beach will always mean a shorter journey.

Pangani and Ushongo: A Quieter Coastal Base

Pangani is a coastal town south of Tanga, at the mouth of the Pangani River. Ushongo is a beach area farther south, with smaller places to stay and options for time on the water.

Consider this coast if you want beach walks and a slower schedule, with the possibility of a historical town visit or a locally arranged excursion. The Tanzania Tourism Board lists activities around Pangani including kayaking, river trips and snorkeling excursions near Maziwe, also written Maziwi.

Plan the transfer to your actual lodge. Being near Pangani on a map does not establish which road, crossing or boat arrangement you will use. Ask what meals are included, too, as going out to a different restaurant every evening may be less practical than on a busy resort coast.

Kigamboni and the Coast South of Dar es Salaam

The coast south of Dar es Salaam includes beach properties around Kigamboni and farther along the shoreline towards Ras Kutani. It can suit a stay linked to a Dar arrival or departure, particularly when you prefer to remain on the mainland.

Compare individual properties carefully. Beach access, pools, dining and the surrounding development vary. Allow for the journey between your hotel and the airport; a coastal location near Dar does not make it an airport hotel.

Kunduchi and the Northern Dar Coast

Kunduchi is north of central Dar es Salaam. This stretch of coast offers beach hotels and places that also attract local day visitors, making it worth considering for a short break near the city.

Ask about the atmosphere on your travel dates, particularly weekends, and whether access to facilities is included in your room rate. If you want several days somewhere with fewer visitors, compare it with a smaller lodge farther along the mainland coast.

Bagamoyo: Beach Time and Coastal History

Bagamoyo is north of Dar es Salaam and has a different appeal from a stay focused entirely on swimming. You can combine time at a coastal hotel with visits connected to the town’s Swahili trading history and nearby Kaole ruins.

The working waterfront and a hotel’s beach are not necessarily the same experience. Check the location of the accommodation and ask about current swimming conditions before deciding whether Bagamoyo fits the beach part of your trip.

Saadani: A Coastal Stay With Wildlife Activities

Saadani National Park borders the Indian Ocean on mainland Tanzania. It is an option for travellers who want a coastal setting with wildlife activities nearby.

Plan it as a national park visit with beach time. Access, park arrangements and excursions need to fit together. Wildlife sightings vary, and photographs of animals near the shore should not be treated as a promise of what you will see. Follow the park and lodge’s guidance about where you can walk or swim.

Mafia and Pemba: Choose Around the Water Activities

Mafia and Pemba can suit travellers who want a smaller island stay and time exploring the water. Neither should be chosen simply because it sounds like a quieter version of a Zanzibar resort. The shoreline, accommodation and travel arrangements need a closer look.

Mafia Island: Snorkeling, Diving and Marine Wildlife

Mafia lies south of Zanzibar, off mainland Tanzania. Its marine attractions make it worth considering if boat excursions and underwater activities are central to your plans.

The Mafia Island Marine Park protects part of the island’s surrounding marine and coastal environment; the whole island is not one continuous marine park or sandy swimming beach. Ask where your lodge is, what its shoreline is like, and whether park fees apply to your stay or excursions.

Whale shark excursions are another reason people visit Mafia. They depend on season and conditions, and sightings cannot be guaranteed. Check the appropriate dates and responsible viewing arrangements before building the trip around that activity.

Pemba Island: Diving and Smaller Coastal Stays

Pemba lies north of Unguja. It has coastal lodges, diving opportunities and beach areas including Vumawimbi in the north. It is a separate destination, rather than a beach you can reach by driving from Stone Town.

For divers, the dive centre and suitable sites matter as much as the room. Ask about experience requirements, sea conditions and boat outings. For a stay focused on the beach, establish whether you can swim from the property or need an excursion to reach the beach you have seen in photographs.

Our Tanzania islands guide gives a broader introduction to island destinations, including places visited for history and wildlife as well as the coast.

Tides, Swimming and Snorkeling: What to Check

The most useful question is: “What is the beach like outside this hotel during my stay?” Conditions differ between coasts and between neighbouring properties.

Before booking, ask:

Reef trips and shore swimming are different activities. A beach can be good for walks without having a reef accessible from the sand. Follow local advice about tides and currents, and use an appropriate operator for trips on the water.

When Is the Best Time to Visit Tanzania Beaches?

June to October and January to February are common starting points for planning a beach stay. March to May generally brings the main rains, while shorter rains can occur later in the year. Timing varies along the coast, and dry-season travel does not guarantee calm seas every day.

Match the month to your main activity. Kitesurfers need suitable wind; divers and snorkelers need conditions appropriate to the sites they will visit. A boat excursion may be changed or cancelled even when the weather on land seems suitable.

For an Unguja stay, use our best time to visit Zanzibar guide for more detail, then confirm conditions and hotel availability for your dates.

How to Add Beach Time After Your Safari

Start with the final night of your safari. That determines which airport, airstrip or road connection makes sense for the coast. Then work backwards from your international departure so that the last transfer fits comfortably.

For a northern Tanzania safari, compare the available connections to Zanzibar before choosing a hotel. For a southern safari, check how the route connects with Dar es Salaam, a mainland coastal stay or an island flight. A connection shown on a map may include stops, limited operating days or a change of airport.

As a planning example, three beach nights give you two full days between arrival and departure. Four or five nights leave more room for a boat excursion or town visit without filling every day. These are suggestions, not fixed packages; the travel time and the pace you want should decide the length.

Accommodation and Budget: Compare the Whole Stay

Your beach budget needs to cover more than the room. Compare the room category, meals, transfers, planned excursions and any separately payable fees. Two similar nightly rates can produce different totals once those details are included.

For families, ask about room layout, connecting rooms, pools and activity age restrictions. For couples, check privacy, nearby entertainment and whether the room category pictured is the one being quoted. An adults-only policy, a private pool or a honeymoon benefit should be confirmed for the particular property and booking.

If Zanzibar is your choice, our Zanzibar holiday planning page covers the next steps. For a combined trip, send your safari route along with the beach preferences so both parts can be considered together.

Tanzania Beaches: Frequently Asked Questions

Yes. Mainland choices include the coast around Dar es Salaam, Bagamoyo, Pangani and Ushongo. Mafia is another island option off mainland Tanzania. Pemba is part of the Zanzibar archipelago but is a separate island from Unguja, where most Zanzibar beach holidays take place.

Nungwi and Kendwa are useful starting points because swimming is generally less restricted by low tide than on much of Unguja’s east coast. The exact location still matters. Check the water outside your hotel and follow advice about currents, boats and swimming areas.

Start with Zanzibar if you want a wider choice of hotels, restaurants and activities. Compare Mafia and Pemba if diving, snorkeling and a smaller island stay are priorities. Check the lodge’s actual beach and transport arrangements before deciding.

Yes. Options include coastal venues around the city and boat excursions to islands such as Bongoyo or Mbudya. Confirm the departure point, return arrangement, sea conditions and what the price includes. A day trip and an overnight beach stay serve different needs.

Some beach properties suit families well, but choose around the hotel’s facilities and the children’s ages. Check room arrangements, pool access, the swimming area and excursion restrictions. Do not assume a shallow-looking beach has supervision or suitable conditions throughout the day.

Yes. Zanzibar is a common choice after a mainland safari, and other coastal options may fit your route. Confirm the connection from your last safari stop and the onward international journey before booking the beach accommodation.
