About the park

Choose the Serengeti area before the lodge

Serengeti National Park lies in northern Tanzania at the heart of a larger ecosystem. Open plains, rocky kopjes, woodland and rivers support both resident wildlife and moving herds.

The national park is not the whole Serengeti ecosystem. The migration also uses adjoining protected areas and crosses into Kenya’s Maasai Mara. A camp described as serving the ecosystem is not automatically inside the national park.

Central Serengeti, the western corridor and the north create different safari routes. Choose a base that suits your dates and priorities. Driving between distant areas uses time that would otherwise be available for game viewing.

Hippo grazing in the Serengeti

A Serengeti stay should be planned by area and airstrip, not the word Serengeti alone. Confirm the camp’s actual location for your travel dates.

Wildlife & habitats

Resident animals and moving herds

Lions, leopards, cheetahs and hyenas are among the predators associated with the Serengeti. Giraffes, elephants and grazing animals add to the wider wildlife experience. Sightings depend on conditions and location.

The Great Migration is an annual movement following changing pasture and water. It is not two separate migrations that follow fixed departure dates. Herd positions and river crossings cannot be guaranteed.

A trip can still focus on resident wildlife when the main herds are elsewhere. Use our Great Migration guide to compare migration interests with the rest of your safari.

Drier travel periods

June to October is generally a drier part of the year. The right Serengeti area still depends on wildlife movements and the trip you want. A calendar does not guarantee a river crossing.

Rain and changing grazing

Rain can bring greener landscapes and shifting herd concentrations. Some tracks become harder to use. Check the camp location, access and game-drive plan rather than assuming the same base works every month.

The Great Migration planning guide covers this journey in more detail. Compare travel dates with the wider Tanzania seasons and ask for the current location of any mobile camp before booking.

Activities

Safari activities in Serengeti

Game drives are the main safari activity. Balloon flights, walks and bush meals require separate confirmation and are not automatically included in every camp rate.

Game drives

Plan time in the habitats around your base, rather than spending every day on long transfers.

Balloon safaris

An optional flight depends on operating area, weather, availability and the booked provider.

Guided walks

TANAPA lists walking safaris. Confirm an authorized provider, location, age rules and the additional charge.

Photography

Allow patient viewing time and follow road and wildlife rules. Specialist filming needs its own permission.

Check official activity information and TANAPA’s Serengeti visitor guide before confirming optional activities.

Getting there

Getting to Serengeti

By road

A road safari from Arusha is a substantial journey. Routes can pass through the Ngorongoro Conservation Area and involve separate access arrangements. Include travel days when comparing safari lengths.

Arrival planning

International arrivals usually connect through a Tanzania arrival airport before travelling onward. Confirm the airport, overnight stop and transfer in the final itinerary.

By air

Seronera is a common safari airstrip for the central area. Other camps may use different airstrips. Verify the booked airstrip, baggage allowance and drive to your camp before buying flights.

Duration

How long to spend

Short visit

A short visit still needs time to reach the park or the booked airstrip. A day dominated by arrival travel is not the same as a full game-drive day.

Two-night comparison

Two nights allow a full day between arrival and departure. Check the times and the area covered before choosing a compact itinerary.

More time

Three or more nights can provide a slower pace or time in another area. More nights help only when the transfers and camp locations fit your priorities.

Costs & fees

Serengeti safari cost and fees

Serengeti safari costs vary with dates, camp choice, group size and the number of nights. Private vehicle costs and internal flights can change the balance between a road and fly-in safari.

Park entry, vehicle charges and overnight or camping charges are separate items to check. A conservation or concession charge may also depend on the booked accommodation arrangements.

Ask whether airstrip transfers, meals, drinks and optional activities are included. A camp category or a single park-entry figure does not describe the full safari cost.

Check TANAPA tariff information and the Tanzania safari cost guide. The quotation should identify the fees and services for your dates.

Before you go

Preparing for your visit

Pack binoculars, sun protection, water and layers for cooler starts. Check luggage restrictions before a safari flight.
