Flying Doctors Africa

Nobody plans for a medical emergency in the middle of the Serengeti, but it happens. That’s exactly why AMREF Flying Doctors exists, an air ambulance service running around the clock across East Africa, with doctors and pilots on standby, ready to move fast when something goes wrong far from a hospital.

What Flying Doctors Actually Covers

For around 40 USD per person, valid for 30 days, you get emergency medical evacuation coverage across Tanzania, Kenya, Uganda, Burundi, and Rwanda. That’s the whole region under one plan, which matters when your trip crosses borders.

Say you twist an ankle badly on a walking safari, or a snake bite has you worried out in the bush. A phone call connects you to a medical professional who can walk you through next steps, sometimes enough to keep your trip moving. But if things are more serious, a bad break, a sudden flare-up of an existing condition, a real emergency, a plane with a full medical team can reach the nearest airstrip fast and fly you straight to a hospital in Nairobi.

Where the Coverage Stops

Flying Doctors handles the emergency response and the transport, and that’s it. It doesn’t cover your hospital bill once you land, and it doesn’t cover treatment. If you’re flown in from outside Kenya, visa costs land on you too, though the team helps streamline that part so you get through immigration and into care quickly.

This service isn’t a substitute for real travel insurance. Think of it as the piece that gets you to help fast, not the piece that pays for the help once you’re there.

Kilimanjaro climbers get an added layer of protection: helicopter evacuation to a hospital in Moshi if things go seriously wrong on the mountain. Weather, terrain, and weight limits all affect whether a helicopter can safely land, so outcomes vary by situation. One important exception to flag: Mount Meru climbs aren’t covered under this plan at all. If Meru is part of your itinerary, make sure your separate travel insurance handles evacuation for that climb specifically.

Why Our Team Recommends Signing Up

Most trips go off without a hitch. The overwhelming majority of our guests come home having had the trip of their lives, no drama, no emergencies, just good memories. But you’re traveling somewhere wild, where unpredictable things occasionally happen, and honestly, that’s part of the appeal.

Flying Doctors has been operating since 1957, which tells you how long this kind of coverage has mattered to safari travelers. We help our guests sign up before departure because it’s inexpensive peace of mind for a trip built around adventure.

Travel Insurance for Your Trip

Beyond emergency evacuation, we ask every guest to carry proper travel insurance. This covers medical costs, but also the more mundane stuff, lost luggage, damaged bags, the things that go wrong even on a trip with zero drama.

Cancellation Coverage Worth Considering

Cancellation insurance deserves a look too, especially for longer trips. Some policies only refund part of your trip cost if you need to cancel, so check the fine print with your insurer before you commit.
