About the park

A park visit beyond the open plains

Arusha National Park brings mountain forest, open grassland, lakes and volcanic scenery into one northern Tanzania visit. Its main areas include Mount Meru, the Momella Lakes and Ngurdoto Crater.

Choose it for giraffes, forest monkeys, birdwatching and a change from an open-plains safari. A park visit can fit around an Arusha stay, while a Mount Meru climb needs its own multi-day plan.

Arusha city and Arusha National Park are different places. For routes leaving the city for several northern parks, use our safaris from Arusha guide. This page focuses on visiting the national park itself.

Forest, grassland and lakes

Look for primates in the forest, grazing wildlife in open areas and water birds around the lakes. Each habitat rewards a different pace.

Build in time to stop and watch. A list of species cannot promise what you will see on one day.

Wildlife & habitats

Forest primates, giraffes and lake birds

Look for giraffes, buffalo, zebra, waterbuck and bushbuck in open areas and along forest edges. Black-and-white colobus and blue monkeys are among the forest primates. Wildlife sightings vary with habitat, weather and time spent looking.

The lakes and forest support different bird communities. Flamingo numbers and locations change, so a lake visit does not guarantee a large flock.

Choose Arusha for its habitats and varied activities rather than a Big Five checklist. Leopard sightings are occasional. For a wider wildlife route, compare northern-circuit safaris departing from Arusha.

Generally drier months

June to October is generally a drier travel period. It can suit walks and outdoor park visits, although weather on the mountain can change. Confirm trail and activity conditions for your date.

Rain and mountain conditions

Rain can bring greener forest and affect visibility, trails and the pace of a visit. Carry rain protection and avoid basing a mountain or walking plan on a dry-weather assumption.

Choose dates according to your activity as well as the wider safari. A game drive, a guided walk and a Mount Meru climb need different preparation. Read our Tanzania seasons guide for the broader trip.

Activities

Activities in Arusha National Park

Game drives, ranger-led walks, canoeing and Mount Meru trekking offer different ways to visit. A park entry ticket does not mean all activities are included. Confirm availability, permissions and charges before booking.

Safari activity

Game drives

Explore designated roads through grassland, forest and the lake areas. Keep time for stops rather than treating the park as a quick transfer.

Confirm arrangements

Ranger-led walks

Arrange an authorized guided walk in advance. The route, ranger arrangements, duration and any age restrictions must fit your group.

Confirm arrangements

Canoeing

Canoeing on Small Momella Lake requires prior arrangements. Confirm the provider, weather conditions and separate charge before adding it.

Confirm arrangements

Mount Meru trekking

A Mount Meru climb is a separate mountain trip with hut and ranger arrangements. A day visit to the park is not a summit itinerary.

See TANAPA’s park attractions and visitor guidance for the authority’s activity and safety information.

Getting there

Getting to Arusha National Park

By road

The main road approach is via Ngongongare Gate near Usa River. Travel time depends on your hotel, traffic and the activity meeting point. Ask for the pickup and gate arrival times together.

Arrival planning

Arusha Airport and Kilimanjaro International Airport serve different arrivals. Neither is a park entrance. Allow for the airport transfer and any overnight stay before the park visit.

Meeting points

Tell the operator whether you need Ngongongare Gate, Momella Gate or another agreed meeting point. Walking and mountain arrangements may have their own reporting instructions.

Duration

How long to spend

Day visit

A day visit can combine game viewing with a separately arranged activity. Choose a realistic plan around pickup, entry formalities, lunch and the return journey.

Nearby overnight stay

An overnight stay near the park can reduce the pressure of a long arrival day. Compare the lodge location with the gate and your next destination.

Mountain itinerary

Keep a Mount Meru climb separate from a short safari visit. Ask for the full mountain itinerary, acclimatization plan, huts and ranger arrangements.

Costs & fees

Arusha National Park costs and fees

An Arusha National Park visit can involve entry fees, vehicle charges, transport and guiding. Walking, canoeing, camping and mountain activities may add separate charges.

The applicable tariff depends on visitor category, age and the activities booked. Ask for the travel dates, taxes and inclusions to be stated in the quote. A single entry-fee figure is not the full cost of a day trip.

For a private trip, compare the total group cost as well as the cost per traveler. Confirm whether lunch, transfers and the return to your hotel are covered.

Use TANAPA’s visitor guide to check fee categories. Our Tanzania safari cost guide explains wider trip budgeting.

Ways to include an Arusha park visit

Day visit from Arusha

Compare your available hours and choose activities that fit one day, including time for the road transfers.

A longer northern safari

Add the park only when the route allows it. A safari departing from Arusha does not automatically enter Arusha National Park.

A visit around your city stay

Keep city sightseeing and the park visit on a realistic schedule around your arrival or departure.

Where to stay

Where to stay for an Arusha park visit

First decide whether you need a base in Arusha city, near Usa River or closer to the park. A hotel described as being in the Arusha region is not necessarily near your gate.

Public and special campsites are different from a lodge stay. Mount Meru trekking huts serve mountain itineraries. Confirm the exact location, meals and transfer arrangements before choosing.

Arusha or Usa River base

Compare the address and transfer to your gate. Confirm whether your next safari starts from the same pickup location.

Camping or a mountain stay

Confirm campsite bookings or Mount Meru hut arrangements separately. These serve different visit plans.

Combine

Combine Arusha with other northern parks

Ngorongoro Crater safari destination

Keep enough time for the road journey and a separately planned crater visit.

Lake Manyara safari destination

Compare a lake and groundwater-forest visit with the time available in your wider safari.

Tarangire safari destination

Tarangire adds a different river and woodland setting to a northern Tanzania route.

Before you go

Preparing for your visit

Bring drinking water, sun protection, binoculars and a layer for cooler starts. For a walk, confirm suitable footwear and any equipment advice with the guide. Keep rain protection available.

Stay on designated routes, do not feed wildlife and leave the vehicle only where permitted. Follow the ranger’s instructions on walks. Drones and professional filming need permission checks before travel.
