The first recorded ascent of Kilimanjaro’s highest summit is credited to Hans Meyer and Ludwig Purtscheller in 1889. Tanzanian guide Yohani Kinyala Lauwo is associated with the expedition’s success. “First recorded ascent” is more precise than assuming that the written expedition record establishes the first person ever to set foot on every part of the mountain.
The 1889 expedition
Meyer and Purtscheller reached the summit during their 1889 expedition. Their achievement depended on guiding, carrying supplies and establishing support on the mountain. Local knowledge and the work of the expedition team belong in this history alongside the names most often used in published ascent records.
Yohani Kinyala Lauwo and local support
Lauwo is recognised in accounts of the expedition as an important Tanzanian guide. The National Geographic Kilimanjaro overview includes his role. Popular retellings attach different biographical details to him; the expedition connection is more useful here than repeating unverified ages or lifetime ascent totals.
Which summit did they climb?
The mountain’s highest point is now known as Uhuru Peak, on Kibo. It stands at 5,895 metres above sea level. Mawenzi and Shira are other principal volcanic cones, not alternative names for the highest summit.
How this history relates to a modern climb
A modern trekking itinerary has different equipment, support and access arrangements from a nineteenth-century expedition. Historical achievement does not indicate whether a present-day route suits an individual. Compare the actual Kilimanjaro climbing programmes and prepare for the walking, weather and altitude involved.
