About the park
A Kenyan park below the Kilimanjaro skyline
Amboseli National Park is in southern Kenya. Mount Kilimanjaro is across the border in Tanzania, although it can be seen from the Amboseli area when cloud and visibility allow.
Open grassland, swamps and woodland create different wildlife settings. The park is part of a wider ecosystem used by elephants and other animals beyond its boundary.
Plan the park visit and any nearby sanctuary stay as separate locations. A lodge in Kimana Sanctuary is not an inside-Amboseli National Park property. The distinction affects transfers, activities and entry charges.
A national park game drive and an outing in a neighbouring sanctuary can have different permissions and charges. Confirm which location each booked activity uses.
Wildlife & habitats
Elephants, wetlands and open-country wildlife
Elephants are a major reason to visit Amboseli. Buffalo, zebra, giraffes and predators also use the wider landscape. Wetlands attract birds and provide a different setting from dry open ground.

Allow patient viewing time rather than expecting every herd beneath a clear mountain backdrop. Kilimanjaro can remain hidden by cloud, even during a productive wildlife drive.
Keep a respectful distance from elephants and let your guide manage the vehicle’s position. Animals move between habitats and beyond the park boundary; no individual animal or photographic scene is guaranteed.
When to visit
When to visit Amboseli
Drier conditions
Drier periods can make some tracks easier to use. Dust and visibility still affect the experience, while wildlife activity changes through the day.
Rain and visibility
Rain can change road conditions, vegetation and birding opportunities. A clear view of Kilimanjaro depends on weather at the time, rather than a promise attached to a month.
Choose dates around your full Kenya route and the time you can spend in Amboseli. Ask about road access, lodge availability and the game-drive schedule for those dates.

Check official activity information and Kenya Wildlife Service’s Amboseli information before confirming optional activities.
Getting there
Getting to Amboseli
By road
KWS lists access through Iremito, Kimana and Meshanani gates. The useful gate depends on your starting point and lodge. The published Kilidove Kenya and Zanzibar itinerary allows a road journey from Nairobi before the first game drive.
Arrival planning
Jomo Kenyatta International Airport and Wilson Airport serve different flight arrangements in Nairobi. Check the actual arrival airport and onward transfer before confirming a flight plan.
By air
Confirm whether a safari flight lands in the national park or at an airfield serving a nearby sanctuary. The chosen lodge still needs a road transfer from the booked landing point.
Duration
How long to spend
Short visit
A return day trip from Nairobi can be dominated by driving. Compare the hours available for wildlife viewing before choosing the shortest option.
One night
One night allows a visit around arrival and departure, subject to the transfer schedule. Confirm the time available inside the park.
More time
Two nights can provide a full safari day between transfers. Extra time also gives another chance of mountain views, without guaranteeing clear weather.
Costs & fees
Amboseli safari cost and fees
An Amboseli quotation depends on transport, number of travelers, dates and accommodation. A private vehicle and optional internal flight affect the total differently.
KWS entry charges vary by visitor category and age. Vehicle, camping and additional activities can have separate charges. Do not use an old 2025 fee table as a current quotation.
A nearby sanctuary may have its own charges. Ask for the national park visit, sanctuary activities, transfers and accommodation inclusions to be itemized.
Check the KWS Amboseli page and the official payment instructions before travel. Your confirmed quotation should identify which charges Kilidove includes.
Your itemized quote should show
- Park charges
- Vehicle and guide
- Accommodation
- Meals
- Transfers
- Optional activities

Where to stay
Where to stay in Amboseli
Compare an inside-park stay with accommodation outside a gate or in the wider Amboseli ecosystem. A mountain view is not proof that a property is inside the national park.
Ask about gate transfers, sanctuary charges, meals and activity permissions. Keep national park game drives distinct from lodge activities on separate land.
Kimana Sanctuary, outside the park
Angama Amboseli
The operator places this lodge in Kimana Sanctuary. Its sanctuary location is separate from an Amboseli National Park game drive.

National park and gate-area stays
Use the KWS visitor information and your proposal to check each property’s location. Ask for the gate and transfer time before choosing a room.
Combine
Combining Amboseli with other stops
A beach extension requires suitable flight connections. The published Kenya and Zanzibar itinerary provides one route to compare.
Before you go
Preparing for your visit
Carry binoculars, water, sun protection and a dust cover for camera equipment. Bring layers for early starts and rain protection when conditions require it.
Remain on established roads and leave the vehicle only at designated places. KWS prohibits feeding wildlife and off-road driving. Follow the ranger and guide instructions throughout the visit.
