About the park
River valleys, woodland and swamps
Tarangire National Park is a northern Tanzania safari destination for elephant herds, baobab trees and dry-season wildlife around the Tarangire River. Its river valleys, woodland and swamps give you a different setting from the Serengeti plains.
Choose Tarangire for a day visit from Arusha or include an overnight stay within a longer safari. The time you spend here affects which areas you can reach and how much driving each day requires.
Tarangire covers about 2,850 square kilometers (1,100 square miles). It is part of Tanzania’s northern safari circuit, alongside Lake Manyara, Ngorongoro and the Serengeti.
The Tarangire River and seasonal water sources shape animal movements. During the dry season, elephants and other wildlife gather near remaining water. After rain, animals can disperse into the wider ecosystem, so a familiar route may produce different sightings.
Busy sightings and entrance areas can attract several vehicles. Staying longer allows more time beyond the areas used by short visits, but quiet roads and particular animals cannot be guaranteed.
Compare your lodge location with the park gate, planned game-drive areas and onward route. A camp deeper inside the park can require a longer transfer than accommodation near the entrance.
Wildlife & habitats
Elephants are a major reason to visit
Elephants are a major reason to visit Tarangire. You may also encounter giraffes, buffalo, zebra and wildebeest. Lions and leopards live here, although sightings depend on animal movements and conditions.

Riverine woodland, grassland and the Silale Swamp area support different animals and birds. Baobab trees are another characteristic of the park. Allow time to watch behavior rather than treating the drive as a species checklist.
Our Tarangire wildlife guide covers the animals and habitats in more detail. Rare animals should be treated as possible sightings, rather than reasons to expect a guaranteed encounter.

- Greener months · birdlife, possible mud
June to October
June to October is the main dry-season window for wildlife viewing around water. Vegetation thins and animal concentrations can become easier to follow. This is also a popular travel period, so accommodation availability needs checking.
After the rains
Rain changes the experience. Greener vegetation and birdlife can reward a visit, while muddy tracks may limit some routes. Rainfall varies between years; seasonal descriptions are planning guidance rather than a forecast.

Compare dry-season wildlife viewing with the changing conditions during greener months. Plan for rainfall, cooler mornings and the effect of wet weather on safari roads.

Getting there
Getting to Tarangire
By road
TANAPA estimates about 2.5 to 3 hours by road from Arusha. Your actual transfer depends on the starting point, traffic, gate and road conditions. Travel onward to your camp or a game-drive area takes additional time.
Int’l arrival
Most international arrivals use Kilimanjaro International Airport. Arusha Airport is a separate airport used for domestic safari flights. Confirm the airport on your booking before arranging transfers.
By air
Kuro Airstrip serves flights into the park. Services, baggage limits and onward transfers depend on the booked flight and camp. A flight does not remove the need for a road transfer after landing.
Duration
How long to spend
Day
A day trip from Arusha is possible, but the return transfers reduce your time in the park. It suits travelers with limited time who accept a longer day on the road.
1 Night
An overnight stay can give you more time for game drives without returning to Arusha that evening.
2 Nights
Consider two nights if you want a slower pace or accommodation farther inside the park. The right duration depends on your route and interests.
Costs & fees
Tarangire safari cost and park fees
A Tarangire safari quote depends on your travel dates, group size, time in the park and accommodation. Private vehicle and guide costs are shared differently by two travelers and a larger party.
Park entry is only one part of the total. Visitor category and age affect fees; vehicles, camping and optional activities may add charges. Tax treatment and the applicable tariff period also need checking.
Ask for an itemized quotation showing park charges, vehicle and guide, accommodation, meals, transfers and optional activities. Confirm how an overnight stay or additional park entry changes the total.
Use the current TANAPA tariff information for official charges. Our Tanzania safari cost guide explains broader trip costs; it is not a fixed Tarangire day-trip price.

Where to stay
Choose by location as well as room style
Choose accommodation by location as well as room style. Inside-park stays can reduce gate transfers, while the distance to each camp still matters. Outside-park stays require planning around entry and driving time.
Confirm room arrangements, meals, child policies and seasonal opening before booking. A property category alone does not confirm which activities or drinks are included.

Combine
Combining Tarangire with other parks
More travel time, usually a longer itinerary
Lake Manyara adds a lakeshore and groundwater-forest setting. Ngorongoro Crater adds a crater-floor visit, while the Serengeti requires more travel time and usually a longer itinerary.
The combination should match your available days and overnight stops. Adding another park can reduce time for game drives if the schedule becomes dominated by transfers.
Before you go
Preparing for your visit

Remain on designated routes and leave the vehicle only where permitted. Do not feed wildlife or block animals approaching water. Follow your guide and ranger instructions throughout the visit.
