Prison Island Tour Zanzibar

Take a boat from Stone Town to Changuu for giant tortoises, island history and coastal views, with optional Nakupenda planning.

A Prison Island tour takes you by boat from Stone Town to Changuu Island, known for its giant tortoises and historical buildings. The visit combines time ashore with a short sea journey, making it a different outing from a city walk or a full beach day.

Prison Island and Changuu Island are names for the same place. Before booking, decide whether you want a standalone island visit or a longer combination with another attraction.

Prison Island and Changuu are the same place

Changuu lies off Zanzibar’s west coast near Stone Town. Its commonly used name can give a misleading impression of the history: the story includes a planned prison and subsequent quarantine use, rather than simply a functioning prison museum.

A guide can help explain the different uses of the site and what remains visible. Look for a clear program rather than choosing solely on the number of activities listed in a tour title.

Tortoises and island history

The Aldabra giant tortoises are a principal reason travelers visit. Observe them calmly and follow the current instructions from the people responsible for the site. Do not climb on, lift or crowd the animals.

Touching and feeding should not be promised as part of the experience. Rules and practice need to be checked locally, and an old photograph or tour description is not permission to handle wildlife.

Leave time for the historical side of the island as well. Buildings and interpretation help put the visit in context instead of reducing the stop to a tortoise photograph.

Boat trip, landing and time ashore

Trips commonly start from the Stone Town waterfront, but your exact boarding point must be confirmed. If you are staying at a beach hotel, the road transfer is an additional part of the outing.

The crossing and landing depend on conditions. Ask how you board the boat, whether you may need to step through shallow water and what assistance is available. Let the organizer know about balance or mobility concerns before choosing a vessel.

Check how much time is allocated ashore. A visit with a detailed historical explanation needs a different pace from a quick circuit followed by a separate beach activity.

Prison Island alone or with Nakupenda

These are two different experiences. Prison Island is a land-based attraction with history and tortoises; Nakupenda is a tidal sandbank.

ChooseWhen it fits your plans
Prison Island on its ownYour main interests are the island’s history and tortoises
Prison Island with NakupendaYou also want sandbank time and can allow a longer boat outing

For a combination, check the order of stops against the tide and sea conditions. A longer list is not necessarily a better choice if you have limited time or prefer a slower day.

Swimming and snorkeling are separate decisions

Do not assume every island visit includes a suitable swimming stop or snorkeling equipment. Shore access, weather and the selected itinerary affect what is possible.

If reef snorkeling is your main interest, compare a dedicated Mnemba snorkeling trip. A brief water stop near Changuu should not be presented as the same product.

What to check before booking

Ask whether the proposal covers return boat travel, guide time, island admission and any hotel transfer. Food, drinks, equipment and another island stop should be listed individually where included.

Bring sun protection, drinking water and footwear appropriate for both boarding and walking. Pack swimwear only when a water activity is part of the agreed plan. Check the arrangements if the boat trip cannot run as planned.

Prison Island tour questions

No. These are land tortoises. Seeing them is different from swimming with turtles or taking a marine-wildlife trip.

Not automatically. Confirm island admission and any other applicable charges separately from the boat and hotel transfer.

It may be possible with suitable timing. Allow time for the walk, boarding and island visit rather than assuming one short excursion covers all three.
