About the park

A safari shaped by the Rufiji River

Nyerere was created from part of the Selous Game Reserve. The two names are related, but they do not describe identical protected-area boundaries. Check which park, gate and accommodation a proposal actually names.

Choose Nyerere if a river setting matters alongside vehicle-based wildlife viewing. The position of your camp affects access to game-drive areas and boat departures, so start with the activities you want to include.

River wildlife and woodland predators

Hippos and crocodiles occupy the Rufiji system, while elephants, buffalo and antelope use the surrounding habitats. Lions and African wild dogs also occur here. Their presence does not guarantee a sighting during your visit.

Riverbanks, open floodplains and woodland support different birds. Allow time for quieter stops instead of judging a boat excursion only by large-mammal sightings.

Drier months generally make road travel and game drives easier. Compare your travel dates with river conditions and the actual operating dates of the camp.

Getting to Nyerere National Park

By road

Road approaches from Dar es Salaam and other southern bases depend on the chosen gate. Confirm the route against your camp location, seasonal conditions and daylight arrival.

By air

Flights may serve airstrips including Mtemere and Kiba. Select the camp before booking the airstrip, baggage allowance and onward transfer.

Boat meeting points

A flight or gate transfer does not automatically include a boat safari. Check the exact pickup and launch arrangements.
