Mikumi day trip from Zanzibar

Mikumi day trip from Zanzibar

On this Mikumi day trip from Zanzibar, you will leave the island for a day of wildlife viewing on the mainland. We will plan the journey around your Zanzibar stay, with flights, a guided game drive and a return to the island. You will not need to spend a night in Mikumi.

Once you reach the park, your time will focus on exploring by vehicle with your driver-guide. You will look for wildlife across open grassland and around the Mkata floodplain, with a break for lunch during the day. Elephants, giraffes, buffalo and zebra are among the animals you may encounter. Lions live here too, but every day's sightings are different.

We will confirm the flights, transfers, vehicle arrangement and meals in your proposal before you book. The itinerary below shows the journey we can discuss for your dates.

Children aged 3 and older can join this safari. The rate for children aged 3 to 15 is US$500 per child. Please share your children's ages when you inquire.

We will start with your journey to the airport

Tell us where you are staying in Zanzibar, and we will work out the departure arrangements with you. If your booking includes a hotel transfer, we will give you the pickup details before the trip. A beach hotel farther from the airport may mean an earlier start.

Keep the identification requested for your flight within reach. If your hotel offers an early breakfast or a takeaway option, arrange that with the property beforehand. You can also leave larger bags at the hotel if it agrees to store them.

We will show the flight routing and mainland arrival point in your travel plan. For this day safari, the proposed arrival serves the Mikumi visit. Flying to Dar es Salaam and continuing by road would create a different journey.

You will meet your guide and begin the game drive

After landing, you will meet the arranged driver-guide and get settled in the safari vehicle. Your guide will explain the day’s plan, including the meal break and when you need to return to the airstrip.

From there, you will explore the park’s accessible wildlife areas. Mikumi’s open floodplain gives you room to watch groups of grazing animals, while woodland edges offer a different setting. Your guide will choose the route around conditions and animal movement rather than follow a fixed checklist of sightings.

Take your time when something interests you. You might want to watch a group of giraffes feeding, follow the movement of zebra or spend longer photographing elephants. Tell your guide what you enjoy so the drive can reflect your interests within the day’s schedule.

For more about the landscape and wildlife, read our Mikumi National Park guide.

We will leave time for lunch and further viewing

You will pause for the lunch arrangement agreed in your quotation. We will let you know whether that is a packed lunch or a meal at a designated stop. Tell us about dietary requirements when we plan the day.

If the flight schedule allows, you will continue game viewing after the break. The afternoon route will also take account of the journey back to the airstrip. We want you to understand how much time you have in the park before you choose the trip.

A meal stop is a chance to rest as well as eat. Follow your guide’s instructions and keep food secure around wildlife. Animals that approach a picnic area should not be fed.

You will fly back to Zanzibar

At the agreed time, you will return to the airstrip for your flight. Once back on the island, you will continue to the drop-off point in your booking. If we have arranged a hotel transfer, we will confirm where it will take you.

Let us know if you are changing Zanzibar hotels that day. We can take the new location into account when preparing the proposal. Share any onward flight details too, so we can assess the connection before the safari is booked.

Accommodation

This is a one-day safari, so no overnight accommodation is required on the mainland. You will return to Zanzibar after the park visit; your Zanzibar hotel remains separate unless included in your quotation.
