Compare Kilimanjaro routes by approach, overnight accommodation, the exact ascent schedule and the walking involved. There is no single best route for every traveller. A useful comparison starts with your available mountain days, hiking experience and preference for huts or camping—not just the shortest distance or lowest headline price.
Compare the five routes published by Kilidove
| Route | Main distinction | What to examine in the itinerary |
|---|---|---|
| Machame | South-western approach; camping | Camp sequence, acclimatisation stages and descent. |
| Lemosho | Western approach across the Shira Plateau | Early approach, overnight stops and total mountain days. |
| Rongai | Northern approach | Ascent profile, upper-mountain itinerary and descent. |
| Marangu | Mountain hut accommodation | Hut arrangements, acclimatisation time and daily walking. |
| Umbwe | Steep southern approach | Rapid early height gain, experience and suitability of the schedule. |
See the actual programmes for Machame, Lemosho, Rongai, Marangu and Umbwe. The programme, services and written quote on each route page matter more than a general comparison table.
Mountain days and total holiday days
Two trips described as “seven days” may count time differently. One may mean seven days on the mountain; another may include hotel or transfer days. Ask for the first and last mountain day, each overnight stop, pre-trek accommodation and the final transfer to be listed separately. Do not infer a day variant from a route name alone.
Which route is easiest?
A less steep section or hut accommodation does not make the whole ascent easy. Assess consecutive walking days, descent, sleeping elevations and the time allowed to acclimatise. Kilimanjaro’s summit is at 5,895 metres, so every summit itinerary involves significant altitude exposure. Read the training guide and discuss personal suitability with a qualified healthcare professional.
Scenery, weather and crowds
Different starting sides and paths provide different perspectives of the mountain. Conditions still change with elevation and weather. No route name guarantees clear views, empty camps or dry trails. Use the seasonal guide to narrow your travel window, then ask about conditions and availability for your actual dates.
Compare the quote as well as the trail
- Check whether the quoted programmes include the same mountain days and hotel nights.
- Compare crew services, meals, park charges and transfers item by item.
- Check supplied equipment, rentals, personal baggage and any optional services.
- Ask about health monitoring, emergency arrangements, insurance requirements and changes to the plan.
- Review payment, cancellation and amendment terms before confirming.
Our cost guide explains the budget comparison. For park access and accommodation background, consult TANAPA’s visitor guide.
Northern Circuit and other route names
You may encounter other approaches and variants in your research. Do not assume that every named route is currently offered by Kilidove or available for your dates. Ask for an actual programme and quote before planning around a particular variant.
